Customer Story

First Priority makes efficiency a first priority.

In tough economic times, First Priority, manufacturer of generic veterinary pharmaceutical products, decided it was time to take a hard look at where they could cut costs without compromising on efficiencies and quality of their products. They began to look for ways to cut costs in reviewing, releasing and approving printed labeling materials.

First Priority’s method for inspection to date had been manual proofreading of all labels, inserts and secondary packaging. With manual proofreading came heavy labor and time costs. This process proved to be challenging on many levels.

• Difficulty in determining proper font sizes
• Transposition of characters
• Foreign language spelling errors
• Inspector fatigue

First Priority decided to invest in a solution that would allow them to reduce costs, increase the level of quality for their products and give them complete peace of mind. After assessing their process, Global Vision was able to install artwork and text comparator systems to accommodate for all their inspection needs in all departments.

“The Global Vision systems really started showing their worth right from the start,” says Bruce Heath of First Priority. “Within the first day of operations, the Global Vision system caught an error. It identified a misspelled word that might have been missed by our manual inspection process.”

Accuracy was not the only major benefit that First Priority received. They were also able to reduce the time that was spent on the inspection process as a whole by 86%.

The reduction in time translated into increased savings and the ability to redistribute the unused resources to other places where it was needed most. First Priority is now also considering future uses for the automated inspection systems, “We are really happy we decided to change the way we do things,” says Heath. “It has really helped us to trim resources to make sure that we were prepared for these tough times.”

First Priority has had such good results in the departments where it is already implemented that they have decided to extend it all the way through their process.

Q&A: The evolution of
the packaging industry
with Arpad Lehoczki

Arpad Lehoczki, Senior Account Executive at Global Vision discusses his views and opinions on the printed packaging inspection industry.

• Over the decade that you have been with Global Vision, what trends have you noticed in the printed packaging industry?

Well, there has always been a need for the verification of printed packaging components and don't think this will ever change. What has changed though is the process being used to verify these materials, especially in the early stages of the packaging workflow process. An example of this would be the shift towards a proofless process in the pharmaceutical environment. What this means is that pharmaceutical manufacturers are pushing their labeling suppliers to take more responsibility for approving all proofs themselves. So these suppliers now become responsible for ensuring accuracy. Before this, suppliers would have to send hardcopy proofs back to manufacturers for approval, which typically meant an even lengthier approval process.

Another trend that I have seen is the move towards CTP (computer to plate) and e-Proofing for the labeling suppliers internally. In the past they used to inspect hardcopy proofs by comparing 2 acetates. Now, everything has shifted to digital inspection, a really valuable tool for QC inspections. This has really helped to streamline processes. Gone are the days when bluelines were sent back to the customer for approval!

Major regulatory bodies have also set forth much change over the years. The EMEA, Europe’s regulatory authority, has now mandated Braille be placed on medical packaging. The FDA has also changed regulations pertaining to placement and content of information on packaging. All which require pharmaceutical companies to evaluate the inspection process. You can see how this would affect manufacturers and suppliers in terms of package inspection and layout.

• Going back to what you mentioned about the pharmaceutical industry, what is your opinion on all these new regulations? For example, the increase in information included on packaging inserts?

Well I think for the end user it is great. The FDA is really just trying to protect the consumer by ensuring all necessary information is present and legible on the packaging. The problem comes for the manufacturer that needs to find space to make these changes. It just adds to the already high overhead costs associated with packaging verifications. The world of inspections is only going to get more complex for these professionals.

• From your experiences what new issues do you think will play a major role in shaping the inspection process in the years to come?

The move towards a greater reliance on automation will certainly play a role. These days, people have less and less time to devote to inspection and these tools are relied upon to assist (if not replace) a function that was traditionally done manually. As a result, Global Vision is committed to offering ways to better help our customers achieve these goals while continuing to look for ways to develop this technology even more.

• The pharmaceutical industry has been a key place for the implementation of Global Vision’s inspection solutions. How do you think all the recent mergers and acquisitions will impact Global Vision?

I think Global Vision will play a key role in helping them to reduce redundancies and increase efficiencies while trying to manage the increase workload that comes with the changeover of the packaging. Global Vision also already has strong relationships with most of these major pharmaceutical companies, which will definitely help the process in that they won't have to reinvest in new technology.

• For those of us not familiar with Global Vision, can you tell us in a nutshell how your average company would benefit from automated inspection solutions?

With the implementation of a Global Vision inspection system companies will see immediate results with inspection time reductions and a dramatic increase in the accuracy as compared to traditional methods. Not only are our solutions turnkey validated systems, but they span all the way through the packaging printed workflow process, straight from creation to print. This is what is really great about this technology; it gives you the capabilities to enhance the whole workflow process and increase efficiencies everywhere.
