Volume 3
This issue:
 |
| Autumn Graphics, a prepress and graphics management company providing
services for an international client base in the consumer goods,
printing and advertising industries praises the improvements brought to
their proofreading process by Global Vision. |
|
Autumn
Graphics' portfolio includes a wide range of packaging graphics
including labels, inserts, cartons, coupons and promotional items. They
called on Global Vision to help them ensure the accuracy of their
production files during the inspection process.
The Issue:
Handling
all the artwork inspections manually can be quite an arduous and time
consuming initiative. “Before the Global Vision system was installed,
our proofreading department could only inspect hardcopy proofs,” says
Autumn Graphics' President, Ben Abray. “Using hardcopies, the customer
artwork approved proof would have to be overlaid with the contract
proof generated from production. The two were then visually inspected
for differences”.
The fact that they could only deal with hardcopy proofs presented several problems for Autumn Graphics.
Waste.
Both money and materials are wasted when printing files on high quality
material as opposed to electronically inspecting them.
Security.
Customer files are sent electronically but must be printed by Autumn
Graphics for hardcopy inspection. This increases the chances of
deviation from the original customer file and increases the chances of
change to the document.
Time.
It would take a substantial amount of time for Autumn Graphics to
manually proofread a customer artwork file.
Accuracy.
Relying strictly on the human eye during the proofreading of customers’
critical documents can be inconsistent.
The Solution:
Being
a forward thinking company, Autumn Graphics decided to find a solution
that could provide them with a more accurate and repeatable method of
inspecting documents before the final contract proofs were generated
and final production files released.
The
implementation of the ScanTVS Proofreader has allowed Autumn Graphics
to inspect all final files to the customer supplied proof (be it a PDF
or hardcopy) without the worry of having to manipulate the customer
file. According to Autumn Graphics, this has proved to be invaluable in
developing a more accurate inspection process. “There is a certain
comfort level that is provided by a full digital comparison that is
unachievable with a manual system” says Ben Abray, “Global Vision
really helped us develop a proofreading process that we are confident
using every time”.
The Benefits:
Reduction in errors due to the consistency and accuracy of the technology.
Reduction in inspection time by automating the proofreading process.
Overall cost savings in materials due to reduction in rework by proofreading digitally before any proofs are produced.

| Leveraging Technology in the Submission & Labeling Process |
By
now everyone is familiar with the PDF. We may not all know what the
acronym stands for (Portable Document Format) but we do know that it is
an efficient means of transmitting documents so they will be visually
represented as we intended. This was the initial thinking behind the
FDA’s guidance; Providing Electronic Submissions in Electronic Format – General Considerations.
At
the time, the FDA wanted to improve the submissions process by
leveraging technology. The PDF was a natural fit. It could accurately
substitute the paper based submissions requirement with an electronic
one. It is reliable, accurate, quick and easy to archive.
Just
as everyone has finally come to terms with the PDF and its impact on
their organizations, we now hear a buzz about a new technology and
associated acronym, SPL. SPL stands for Structured Product Labeling, it
is a standard for use of XML (extensible markup language) written by
Health Level Seven (HL7).
A single XML
master document can be created from which all other labeling documents
for that product can be generated and formatted automatically. Content
can be reused and applied to alternate formats, something a PDF cannot
do. Risk of errors within the labeling process could be substantially
reduced as the need to recreate label text would be eliminated.
It
would be unfair to think of SPL as a replacement for the PDF. The PDF
allowed organizations to replace their hardcopy systems with similar
electronic ones. SPL will allow organizations to rethink the way they
use their content and allow them to leverage technology to improve
their processes. Imagine the impact of creating a single, all
encompassing master for a product and then pre-configured templates to
create all of the associated labeling files. SPL will enable these
types of changes, while the PDF will remain constant and unchanged,
exactly as it was intended!
Many companies rely on Global Vision to verify
the accuracy when comparing revisions to FDA approved SPL documents. In
doing so they are able to achieve the absolute highest level of content
integrity. Regardless of the changes in technology, content integrity
will always be a priority and Global Vision will support both current
and future standards.
